Self loathing is a terrible habit. I know. It is my habit.

It's all wrapped up in body-image, confidence (lack thereof) and fear.

It's impact is significant. It filters into nearly all aspects of my life. There are many things that I'd love to try, but I let my fear of looking stupid, or of being in front of people in my less than ideal state, stop me.

Biggest hangup: my body. I am significantly overweight. I carry it evenly, and therefore disguise it fairly well, but regardless, that is the cold, honest truth. I'm not going to sit here and complain that "nothing I do works!!!" because to be perfectly honest, I haven't been great at doing anything. And that is compounding the problem. Like many people, daily I start out with great intentions, but midway through the day I get distracted by boredom, or stress, or habit, and I just start munching. And then after giving up for the day, I feel like a total failure and like it's hopeless and nothing will ever fix this problem.

I know ALL the tricks. Keep your hands busy (find a project to work on to keep from eating), drink water, chew gum, etc, etc, etc... Trust me - I have a binder full of tips and tricks. I just don't seem to translate that into action. (I was going to use the word 'can't', but I know that's a cop out. I can, I just don't)

I'm not blogging about this to have a pity-party (too much). But I'm at a point in my life where I want more than this. I want to be more than what I am. I ache for change. It seems such a shallow and frivolous thing to be so worked up about, but truly, this is a HUGE (no pun intended) issue for me! It truly does impact my life deeply and daily.

So why then am I blogging about this? Because I am going to DO something. Whatever it takes. No sacrifice is too great to make for me to feel good about myself. I will not feel picked on when I choose to pass on a treat, or my old dining out foods of choice. I will feel empowered every time I make a choice that leads me towards my goal. And when I slip, I will not throw in the towel for the rest of the day/week. I will start again that moment. And I hope to see real changes that I will post here.

On Monday I will post a "before" picture, and once a month, I will post a "current" picture. Hopefully this accountability will keep me focused. I certainly don't want to post the photos and not see a difference from one month to the next...

Anyways, I think that's enough of that for now. It was very therapeutic writing this. I started in tears, and now feel hopeful about things. Enthusiastic even.

Goal for week of 3/9: Run 3 times, walk 3 times, eat smaller portions (use my salad plates as a way to cut back), & lastly - drink more water!

As I finish this up - I'm considering deleting the whole thing. Why would any of my friends want to read this??? But, in the spirit of keeping it real, I'm going to leave it. Sorry if you were bored to tears, or whatever. I feel better having written it, so I think I'll just leave it.

At least for now. :)

Good for you. I always found that if I had someone else "helping and encouraging" me I was able to keep on task better. Maybe like an exercies buddy or (gasp) a weigh in buddy. It worked for me!

Is there something to work towards? Don't go all postal like me and sign up for a triathlon, but is there a race or half marathon in a few months that would give you reason enough to get busy? I suggest this because I have never in my life been successful at staying with a fitness routine. I always start off gung ho and end up just quitting. Since I signed up for the tri, I have a reason to keep with it. I HAVE to or I will fail miserably in Seattle. Now that I have been consistently working out 6 days a week for about 6 weeks, I can't imagine NOT doing it every day. It is so true that once you do something for a month it becomes habit. It is now my habit to workout each day, and I feel so good! I have so much energy and I am a totally different mom. My poor kids had no idea I was lurking inside that impatient rude mommy, LOL! I have not lost any weight, in fact I have gained 2 pounds. If it were not for my goal of the triathlon, I would have totally gotten discouraged at that notion and quit. BUT, I can't! And I love that I am bound to this commitment, because I am finally going to reach a goal that I set and it feels so wonderful!

WOW. I kind of got diarrhea of the mouth there. Sorry.
Anyways, I hope I'm making some sort of sense to you. I didn't mean to go on and on about myself, but maybe something will connect with you? Good luck. Set a goal. Keep with it. Do it for 30 days and it WILL become habit.
Love you!

I do the salad plate thing and love it. I also have had to try to just let go of the food that I think I have to have. It's weird, but I just hate not eating it, like the food will have hurt feelings or something...anywho...i love you and am here for you.

I wish that I would have read this post before I made those cookies for us at your parents house. I am not much help. So another idea, everyone around needs to be aware and not give you tempting things. Like what I did today. I will help you and you can help me.

I hope you know I'm up for walking/running whenever. I have been a huge slacker too, but if I make a commitment to someone else, I'm much better about sticking with it. Seriously I have done nothing (I ran once) since Thanksgiving. Whatever I can do to help let me know. So let's get together and go!!!

It's interesting the way we feel about our selves and how hard it is to be positive. What's more interesting is that you are one of my most beautiful friends. From head to toe, inside and out. I am intimidated by your creativeness, your ability to dress PERFECTLY and your beautiful way with words. You make everyone feel so comfortable.
Good on you for your goals. You will make it! We've got the Race for the Cure in just a few short weeks!

You are awesome Karen! As I was reading that I felt like I was reading my own writing. I have held myself back usually in social situations because I don't think that I'm cute enough to "pull certain things off"....I also feel like this is my last ditch effort. I have never felt like I looked good even in college when I was super skinny I thought I was huge. Now I feel like if I don't do it now I will look back at my life and wonder where my smokin hot time in my life went. So lets do this thing! I second Angela's....I would love to walk/run with you any time....I need the motivation of a commitment to someone else....sure would be nice if the weather would throw us a bone though! (If you wanted to run today though I could use some of my buddy passes to get us into my gym....we'd just have to wait until someone could watch your youngers....the budy passes don't cover child care....let me know I think it would be a fun way to start!)

thanls for posting that and being so honest. I think most everyone feels that way about some part of themselves. We are all insecure about something( me... my posture, long neck, stickly body...I could go on) LOl... and good for you for wanting to do something about it so you can feel happier. do remember though that you are beautiful inside and out! good luck!
