The Rescue

Today we were on our way to lunch (Bryson was home for "take your child to work day" - don't ask), and we saw a couple of neighbors at the corner lifting the storm drain/grate.  Then we saw the mother duck.  And we knew what had happened.

By the time we got over there, they had the grate off, so John started reaching down and got 2 of the ducklings out.  The raced to their mother, but the rest of the babies took off into the pipe.  It was so sad to hear their little peeps and the mother's calling out.  Her voice got all hoarse from calling.

We lifted the other grate up, and Bryson saw that there was a drop off, and the ducks were trapped.  We had to take off the street cover and climb down. (and by we, I mean Bryson and John)

John kept bringing the birds up one by one, Bryson had to go down the pipe to get the last 2, and finally, all 10 babies were reunited with their mamma.  I was glad that we were able to see what happened and help rescue those cute babies.

...And they lived happily ever after.   I hope.
